CONCRETE BLOCKS

In the early 1900s, coal-fired plants created a byproduct called ash. Francis Straub discovered that these ashes were cementitious, or had the property of cement. He began adding ash and reducing the amount of cement in his cinder block mix, until he finally patented his mix of materials for cinder blocks. Many others made their own versions, but their combination was insulated (resistance to conductive heat flow), lightweight, and versatile enough that a nail could go through and hold it.

These cement blocks were a great way to recycle the coal waste that used to be dumped in growing cities. This recycling also helped add strength to the concrete blocks while reducing costs. The production of cinder blocks revolutionized the cinder block industry and the name cinder block caught on and stuck long after the blocks were manufactured.
